Grrrrr

Thanks to an idea from The Great She Elephant, ten things about Budgens in Crouch End that make me irrationally angry....

1. The Tesco Metro next door has failed to put them out of business

2. I hate Tesco but I sometimes go in there in the hope of contributing towards achieving #1

3. Pavement logjam

4. Having to hesitate and break stride when approaching the automatic door because it doesn't open quickly enough

5. Miserable instore promotions featuring tastings of the most unappetising looking and unhygenically presented foods you could possibly imagine

6. Why is the fruit and veg. section so fucking gloomy?

7. Putting a picture of some ruddy-faced farmer on meat products in the hope that might be interpreted as giving it some organic credentials

8. Running out of staple foods by 3pm EVERY Sunday

9. Miserable staff - although I would be if I had to work there

10. It smells funny

In fairness, the arrival of Tesco has made them raise their game slightly.

A lot of the staff seem to have the most appalling personal hygiene problems which may contribute to the smell.

Don't forget the fact that you can always find at least two items of food past their sell-by date, and that their receipts rather cheekily carry the phrase 'THE CROUCH END EPICUREAN'. I don't think so...

Thank you GSE and Clair - these are all good and valid additions to the list. I thought I'd stop at 10 which seems a nice number although, as you point out, there is so much more we could say. Now don't get me started on Woolies.....although I have yet to find anything in there worth buying so it seems a little churlish to do a job on them.

My favourite Crouchy shop is the hardware one, where I once took a garden tool to the counter, and asked the man behind it 'What is this?. He replied 'A spade', and I relished the moment when I could finally utter the words 'I like a man who calls a spade a spade'.

I don't know - I quite like the utter pointlessness of Woolies

Both Budgens and Woolies have been there donkeys years in one form or another.

Budgens is good for that last dodgy bottle of wine when you can't drive anywhere.

Woolies is good for shelter when its raining heavily.

Like a smelly old nan; you'll miss them terribly when they are gone...;0)
